Tsavo East National Park
Bushy grasslands and open plains alternate with semi-arid acacia scrub and woodlands in this Park which is renowned for some of the largest elephant and buffalo herds in Kenya. Together with the arid environment and red dust these create spectacular photo opportunities. Tsavo East is recognised as one of the last remaining of wilderness and biodiversity strongholds on Earth. Natural attractions include the Galana River and Lugard’s Falls, the Yatta Plateau – which is the remnants of a massive lava flow and Mudanda Rock – the natural vantage point which overlooks a much visited and photographed drinking hole. The south of the park is the busier but it is still remarkably quiet while north of Galana is a true wilderness where private operators offer camel safaris.
Tsavo West National Park Â
Tsavo West offers a spectacular and extremely varied natural landscape, including volcanic cones, rocky outcrops and lava flows, mountains, stream forests, lakes or wooded meadows. Among the main attractions are Mzima Springs (the main source of the Tsavo River), Chaimu Crater and Roaring Rocks, two extraordinary views.
Amboseli National Park
The landscape of Amboseli is dominated by the snow cap of Mount Kilimanjaro, open plains, acacia woodland, swamps and the massif of Ol Doinyo Orok. Renowned for its excellent Masaai giraffe, elephant, lion and cheetah viewing and not surprisingly it is one of Kenya most popular parks. The birding is excellent especially near the lakes and swamps. The park is famous for being the best place in Africa to get close to free-ranging elephants among other wildlife species. Other attraction of the park includes opportunities to meet the Maasai people and also offers spectacular views of Mount Kilimanjaro, the highest free-standing mountain in the world.
Lake Naivasha
Lake Naivasha is the highest of the Rift Valley Lakes and despite having no outlet is one of only two Rift Valley freshwater lakes. The beautiful lake is fringed by papyrus and acacia trees and supports a vast array of bird species. Although it is more than 10kms across it is very shallow and its area varies considerably with the rainfall, so much so that in the early 1900s it totally dried up.
Loita Hills
The Loita Hills area in Kenya’s Southern Rift Valley is one of the nation’s last frontiers of pristine, untouched wilderness. Rising to over 2000 metres, the hills cover an area of some 200 square kilometres and form an important part of the Maasai Mara Ecosystem. Patches of remote forest are flanked by wide open plains, and the hillsides are dotted with an abundant variety of wildlife. Visitors can hike with local Maasai guides and explore the magnificent forest, filled with cedar, Opodo, strangler figs, and see an impressive variety of birdlife. Buffalo, elephant, baboon, bushbuck, hyena, leopard, and over 2000 colobus monkeys have made their home here too. Gorgeous waterfalls add to the experience. The area is inaccessible to vehicles, making the landscapes here relatively untouched.
Masai Mara
The Masai Mara together with Tanzania’s Serengeti form Africa’s most famous wildlife park. The image of acacia trees on an endless grass plain epitomises Africa for many, and then add a Maasai warrior and some cattle to the picture and the conversation need go no further. The annual wildebeest migration through the Serengeti and the Masai Mara is the largest mass movement of land mammals on the planet – with more than a million animals following the rains. But that is not where the game viewing ends; large prides of lions, elephants and giraffes in grasslands, gazelles and eland to mention but a few. Aside from traditional vehicle safaris, hot-air ballooning over the Mara plains has become almost essential and you can even do a horseback safari.
